The produces from Khayr Qatarna meaning ‘bounty of Qatar’ will hit the market "within a few months", dean of Weill Cornell Medicine –Qatar (WCM-Q) told Gulf Times.
“The produces will be under the brand name Khayr Qatarna. We will start bringing them into the market within a few months. The students are being taught in the entire aspects of agricultural production as well as selling the produces,” said Dr Javaid Sheikh.
“The Project Green House started initially with a pilot project of 15 greenhouses. It proved to be an instant hit and we expanded the programme. Now we have more than 130 greenhouses in almost every elementary school in Qatar.” explained dean Sheikh.
“In the new phase, we are expanding it further. We have begun installing three extra-large, climate-controlled greenhouses with state-of-the-art irrigation facilities. This will be expanded to 10 such greenhouses which will enable us to grow more fresh healthy produce. They will be brought to the local market under the name Khayr Qatarna," continued the official.
According to dean Sheikh, the three initial extra-large greenhouses will be able to provide an yield of about five to six tons of cucumbers and 1.25 tons of tomatoes per six month growing season. “ There will also be large crops of a wide variety of other vegetables like broccoli, green beans, zucchini, eggplant among others. This will also help children learn agricultural science, logistics and marketing as well as contributing to the efforts of the country for food security,” he added.
