The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has started implementing Phase 1 of the Roads and Infrastructure Development Project in Al Shamal.

A wide range of rehabilitation works will be carried out as part of the project in order to develop the existing local roads, enabling them to meet the requirements of the growing population in Al Shamal.

The project also includes building permanent developed roads and a new sewage network in the area to serve about 3,600 business and residential buildings, Ashghal has said in a press statement.

The Roads and Infrastructure Development Project in Al Shamal extends from Al Ruwais to Aba Dhelouf, and is planned to be completed in Q3, 2019 at a cost of about QR700,000,000, according to the authority.

The works include providing roads connected to all houses in the area and upgrading existing roads, in addition to building roads that lead to all land plots that are not built yet. As part of the project, 40km of new internal roads will be built while 80km of existing roads will be rehabilitated, increasing their capacity. The works will also include installation of three traffic signals and 4,500 lighting poles, and the construction of 12 intersections, Ashghal has explained.

Further, the construction works include 28km of sidewalks and 8,000 car parking slots, while 1,000 signboards will also be installed in the area, enhancing the safety of road users and pedestrians.

The works Ashghal will complete, whether on existing roads or the ones it will construct, include asphalt works, road markings, pavements, medians, and installation of lighting systems and signboards to enhance safety, the statement points out.

The authority has stressed that the Roads and Infrastructure Development Project in Al Shamal will help improve the area, with residents benefiting from the developed, sustainable, safe roads, in addition to eliminating inconvenience caused by maintenance works that used to take place on deteriorating roads in the area. The project will also enhance traffic safety through the construction of signal-controlled intersections and speed monitoring systems, which help reduce accidents noticeably.

To reduce inconvenience caused by the project works, Ashghal has said it will put in place a plan that will meet all the requirements of residents, schools and business owners - specifically during this period. Also, safety barriers will be provided to separate residential and work areas.

Dust and noise control works also take place and Qatar Construction Specifications 2014 will be followed to ensure that the highest standards are met in all construction works, the authority has stressed.
