The College of the North Atlantic – Qatar (CNA-Q) campus celebrated the
National Sport Day. A variety of activities were offered to appeal to
all ages and abilities, including a family swim, billiards tournament,
tennis tournament, and kids zone with a bouncy castle.
The largest turnout was for the annual Terry Fox Run, which drew a crowd of over 300 people walking, running and cycling a circuit around the state-of-the-art campus. The Terry Fox Run is an annual event in Canada to raise money for cancer research. The event has been held on the CNA-Q campus for 14 years now, raising over QR1,000,000 for cancer research in Qatar.
The National Sport Day was an opportunity to become inspired to live a healthier lifestyle, and the campus community was certainly inspired by student Jamela al-Humaidi. Jamela lost 60kg over the past three years since starting as a student at the college. She originally sought the advice of a nutritionist and from there planned her daily eating routine, cutting out unnecessary calories and started eating much healthier than she had been doing.
With the help of the college’s recreation staff she learned to swim by overcoming her severe fear of the water. From there she started using the fitness room facilities, and is now starting to train in powerlifting.
The third year Business Management – Accounting student says she has a new lease on life.
“My whole weight loss journey made me realise things I never imagined that I would be capable of doing. Not only my lifestyle and weight changed, but also my personality. Because of my journey I was able to come out of my own shell, in fact my level of confidence boosted to the max.”
