Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) has announced that it has provided a $3mn humanitarian grant to support the water and sanitation sector in Mosul city in Iraq and its surroundings, focusing on the rehabilitation of water networks in the region, distribution networks and water supply stations.
The project will be implemented in co-operation with Unicef and Qatar Red Crescent to support water and sanitation sector for displaced civilians returning home to and around Mosul, according to a press statement from QFFD.
The agreement was signed by Misfer bin Hamad al-Shahwani, QFFD’s executive director of the Development Projects Department, and Geert Cappelaere, Unicef regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, on behalf of Unicef.
The grant aims at enhancing water quality control in Mosul, improving water, sanitation and hygiene facilities in primary healthcare centres, improving them in primary schools and developing a water safety plan for the Nineveh Governorate, the statement explains.
Further, the project also aims at providing children and their families with access to adequate and safe water services in their areas of return and access to sanitation services in health and education facilities. In addition, it is designed to strengthen the role of the Water Directorate in Nineveh Governorate and build its capacity to provide integrated water resources, said al-Shahwani.
“The generous contribution from Qatar Development Fund is critical for Unicef’s efforts to assist children in Iraq, allowing us to increase access to clean water and improve water and sanitation facilities, including in schools and communities affected by the violence in the country,” said Cappelaere.
