The Study and Research Department at the Cultural Village Foundation - Katara organised a cultural seminar on the occasion of the UN Arabic Language Day under the theme “Arabic Language in the digital era, reality and challenges.”

The seminar, held in collaboration with the Police College, was attended by Minister of State HE Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kuwari, and the Police College director general Brigadier Dr Mohamed Abdallah al-Mohanna al-Marri in addition to several other linguists, scholars and visitors.

The event started with a lecture delivered by Khalifa al-Sayyed, head of Research and Studies Department at the Police College who stressed on the importance of Arabic language in the cultural and literature fields.

He highlighted the support the Qatar government provides to preserve and promote Arabic language with a video that featured many of the initiatives such as the World Organisation for Renaissance of Arabic Language and others.

“We oblige our students to learn Arabic language properly as it is one of the major courses and a first of its kind for Police Colleges”, he added.

Dr Nadia Abdulrahman al-Madahka, head of Research and Study Department at Katara, also delivered a lecture on the challenges facing Arabic language on the Internet and discussed ways of promoting it to become reliable and to establish a search engine in Arabic.

Mostafa Abu Daher, Arabic proof reader and lecturer at the Police College, discussed some difficulties facing scholars and students using the Internet in Arabic. “There is insufficient content in Arabic language on the Internet which makes it more difficult on students to do research”, he said.

Daher said this insufficiency of content also makes it hard for professors to check the research thesis of students and highlighted the need to digitise all traditional research papers on the web to make good use of them.

HE al-Kawari honoured some of the attendees and professors for their efforts and contributions for promoting Arabic language.
