Water and electricity rates for licensed barns across the country should be reduced to help their owners cut operational costs and redirect their assets to increase production, Central Municipal Council (CMC) members have recommended.
At its bi-weekly regular session last Tuesday, the CMC asked the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) to study the possibility of allowing the owners of licensed barns to pay lower rates for water and electricity consumption in order to encourage them to enhance their livestock production as they play an important role in the supply chain to ensure food security in the country.
The council also recommended similar benefits for 'mobile' and 'roaming' barns in the country. Besides, the ministry should conduct awareness campaigns for the owners to instruct them on the issue of barn classification, the necessary requirements and how to maintain them.
Meanwhile, some officials from the MME's livestock department noted that there is an ongoing co-ordination with the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) on the issue. A number of joint meetings have been held to study the subsidy of electricity and water consumption for the barns in accordance with their production classification.
They explained that to encourage livestock and barn owners to develop their activities and participation in the local food security chain, the subsidies and support given to barns will be linked to their classification in a number of categories - such as ideal, productive, medium, weak or neglected barn.
This is to be done through a clear and well-defined mechanism involving certain procedures and conditions, which will be issued in co-ordination with Kahramaa.
The council also issued a number of suggestions and recommendations regarding the naming of some streets, areas and intersections across the country.
The CMC celebrated Qatar National Day at its headquarters in the presence of its members, staff and employees, who stressed the importance of the occasion for everyone living on this land of welfare and prosperity to renew their loyalty, love and appreciation for the country and its wise leadership.
The members further stressed that it is a key occasion to remember the glories and struggles of the past and the various achievements of the present, and look forward to a brighter future of progress and advancement.
