The Ministry of Municipality and Environment on Wednesday launched a campaign to remove abandoned cars in Al Khor and Al Thakhira Municipality.
This is the third campaign being implemented by the Joint Committee for Removing Abandoned Vehicles. It comes in implementation of Law No. 18 of 2017 regarding public hygiene.
Assistant Director of the Mechanical Equipment Department and a member of the committee, Marzouq Mubarak al-Masfari, said that the first campaign to remove abandoned cars, carried out in the Industrial Area in Doha, was launched in July which resulted in the removal of about 1,500 cars.
Another campaign targeted different areas of Al Rayyan Municipality in which nearly 700 cars were removed, bringing the number of cars removed to 2,200, he said.
He pointed out that the third campaign will continue for a week during which about 200 cars are expected to be removed from various areas of Al Khor and Al Thakhira Municipality and transferred to the detention spots in Umm Slal area.
Al Masfari added that awareness campaigns will be stepped up and more areas will be targeted during the coming phase.
Head of the general control section at Doha Municipality Hamad Sultan al-Shahwani called on the owners of abandoned vehicles to co-ordinate and co-operate with the committee.
Director of the Control Department in Al Khor and Al Thakhira Municipality Abdulaziz Ahmed al-Sayed confirmed that a large number of abandoned cars have been removed.
For his part, Lt Youssef Fahd al-Ali from the General Directorate of Traffic and a member of the committee explained that after removing the vehicles and impounding them for three months, their licences are cancelled if their conditions are not legalised.
