Qatar has reiterated its support to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and its various activities, with the aim of combating terrorism, organised crime, drug trafficking and corruption in the world.
This was announced by a Qatari delegation participating in the tenth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (COP10).
The delegation was headed by Adviser to HE the Minister of Interior Major General Dr Abdullah al-Mal. The other members were Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr Ahmed bin Hassan al-Hammadi, Qatar's ambassador and the country's Permanent Representative to the UN and international organisations in Vienna Sultan bin Salmeen al-Mansouri.
Director of the United Nations Office in Vienna on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Dr Ghada Wali also attended the meeting.
Al-Mal said Qatar has funded the global programme for the implementation of the Doha Declaration, issued by the 13th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in 2015, which is the largest programme offered by any country in the history of the organisation.
It has become a model for the support provided by countries to the United Nations office, he said.
This programme has proved its effectiveness and vitality and has achieved the highest possible outcomes to support the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the coronavirus pandemic has not prevented the programme from continuing its work, al-Mal said.
He said the global programme has benefited 186 countries, including 36,000 youth and 65,000 children.
UNODC Director Wali said her office looked forward to continuing the work and co-ordination with Qatar in a way that strengthens the response to organised crime.
She expressed her gratitude for the generous support provided by Qatar to the United Nations and the Vienna office, especially with regard to the implementation of the global programme of the Doha Declaration.
