New agreements will be signed between Qatar and Turkey on the next Joint Higher Strategic Committee meeting slated before the end of the year, Turkish ambassador Mehmet Mustafa Goksu said on Wednesday.
“After years of harmony, the Joint Higher Strategic Committee between Turkey and Qatar was established in 2014; and the political and security understanding between Qatar and Turkey was reflected in their economies.
“This strengthened the summit meetings between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, which exceeded 28 summits since 2014.
“The number of meetings held by the Turkish-Qatari Higher Strategic Committee reached five, as it concluded more than 50 agreements,” Goksu told a press conference at the Turkish embassy in Qatar.
In his speech, the ambassador lauded the growth of economic and trade cooperation between Qatar and Turkey. He said the volume of bilateral exchange increased from $340mn in 2010 to $2.4bn in 2019, adding that the Covid-19 outbreak “had only a limited impact” on both countries’ bilateral trade.
"I take this opportunity to congratulate the Qatari people for completing a large number of World Cup facilities ahead of schedule. We are pleased with the contribution of Turkish construction companies to infrastructure projects in Qatar, whose value since 2002 has amounted to more than $18bn, as 535 Turkish companies operate in Qatar in various fields. Our country is considered a safe haven for Qatari investments, which amounted to more than $22bn, and more than 179 Qatari companies operate in Turkey.
“I wish our Turkish people and nation, on the occasion of the anniversary of the founding of the 97th republic, to continue the process of progress and achieve more achievements under the leadership of His Excellency President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and I also wish the people and government of Qatar more prosperity under the leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani,” Goksu said.
