Qatar participates in resumed World Health Assembly, WHO board meetings

Qatar is participating in the resumed 73rd session of the World Health Assembly, which has begun its work last Monday via video conferencing and will run until November 14 as well as in the meetings of the resumed 147th session of the Executive Board of the World Health Organisation (WHO) to be held next Monday.

The Qatar delegation is chaired by HE the Minister of Public Health Dr Hanan Mohamed al-Kuwari.

The Meetings of the World Health Assembly discuss many important topics, including the report of the Executive Board on its 145th and 146th sessions. The Assembly’s main committee “A” will review the first three pillars - of onebn more people benefitting from universal health coverage, better protected from health emergencies and enjoying better health and well-being.

The Committee reviews and updates information on issues reviewed by the executive board, including primary healthcare, follow-up of high-level meetings of the United Nations General Assembly on health-related issues such as universal health coverage: moving together to build a healthier world, the political declaration of the 3rd high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases", as well as the vaccine action plan.

The main committee "A" will also discuss the global code of practice on the international recruitment of health personnel, the Independent Oversight and Advisory Committee for the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, WHO's work in health emergencies, influenza preparedness, and the international Health Regulations (2005).

The main committee “B” of the World Health Assembly will discuss several important topics, including the health conditions in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem and the Occupied Syrian Golan, and Pillar 4: More effective and efficient WHO providing better support to countries. The committee will also discuss governance issues, WHO reform, and evaluation of election of the director-general of the World Health Organisation.

The World Health Assembly is the supreme decision-making body of WHO. It meets once a year and is attended by delegations from all WHO Member States. The main functions of the World Health Assembly are to determine the policies of the Organisation, appoint the Director-General and supervise the financial policies of the Organisation.

Qatar will also participate in the meetings of the resumed 147th session of the Executive Board of WHO next Monday. It will discuss many important topics, Pillar 4: More effective and efficient WHO providing better support to countries, the outcome of the 73rd World Health Assembly.

The World Health Organisation Executive Board is responsible for giving effect to the decisions and policies of the Health Assembly, to advise it and generally to facilitate its work.
