President of the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Volkan Bozkir appointed HE Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani and Permanent Representative of Poland Ambassador Joanna Wronecka to lead and facilitate negotiations on Security Council reform. This is in accordance with General Assembly resolutions calling for reform of the Council in terms of equitable representation and increasing the number of its members and other issues related to Security Council reform.
In a letter to all UN Member States, Bozkir said that the General Assembly decided to continue the intergovernmental negotiations on Security Council reform at an informal session of the General Assembly during its 75th session. He added that this early appointment should provide an opportunity for Member States to start consultations on issues related to Security Council reform at an appropriate time.
Appointing HE Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani to this task comes in recognition of the role of Qatar in the United Nations, its belief in the principle of multilateralism and its keenness to develop the mechanisms of work of the international organisation to achieve its goals, including reforming the work of the Security Council.
